The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Human Resources Manager / Strategic Business Partner to join our Melbourne office on a full-time, 13-month fixed-term contract to cover a period of parental leave.
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Senior Human Resources Manager / Strategic Business Partner is a critical role within the Human Resources team. The role is responsible for all human resources operations for a portfolio of legal departments in our Melbourne office, operating as a senior strategic business partner and trusted advisor within a collaborative, high-performing and high-touch environment.
Your duties will include:
Acting as the primary HR contact for Melbourne-based legal departments, providing strategic and practical advice across the employee lifecycle;
Guiding and influencing partners on HR matters, including talent acquisition, workforce planning, leave management (including parental leave) and employee relations issues;
Providing confidential support on disciplinary matters, terminations and workplace health and safety issues, working closely with the Director of Human Resources as required;
Managing career development, performance, reward and recognition processes, including review-cycle planning, communications and reporting;
Driving initiatives that strengthen engagement, performance, productivity and retention;
Acquiring and managing high-quality talent for Melbourne's legal departments through recruitment agencies, networks, staff referrals, LinkedIn and other sourcing channels, and supporting partners to onboard and integrate new employees during their first six months;
Contributing to the seasonal clerk and law graduate program, including strategy, marketing initiatives, university events, careers fairs and volume interviews in September;
Supporting the Director of Human Resources with firm-wide programs and initiatives, and contributing to HR planning, process improvements (including AI) and monthly HR reporting;
Maintaining HR policies to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and industrial awards; and
Supervising, coaching and managing the Human Resources Business Partner and Human Resources Administrator. Collaborating with the Organisational Development Manager and the broader HR team on joint projects and annual activities.
The role requires regular and ongoing interaction with partners, staff and external stakeholders, and the ability to respond to people-related issues that are often sensitive, complex and time-critical. In-office attendance is essential to achieve this.
About You
You will hold tertiary qualifications in Human Resources, Business or a related discipline, and bring senior management level human resources experience within a legal services environment. Experience working within a law firm is essential for this role. The role would also suit a senior HR leader, seeking a strategic, hands-on business partnering role.
You are a highly consultative HR business partner with exceptional relationship-building, communication and influencing skills. You bring strong commercial acumen and knowledge of employment legislation, industrial awards and workplace health and safety requirements. You exercise sound judgement and discretion, take a proactive, solutions-focused approach to people matters and risk, and have experience supervising and developing team members.
